Conference on the Intellectual and Theological Heritage of Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI

Most of the activities of the CSC are internationally oriented and thus are typically conducted in English. In 2022, the former director of the CSC, Prof. Oded Irshai, began a tradition of hosting one conference per year that is geared toward our local Israeli audience, and thus, in Hebrew. Last year’s conference dealt with shifts in Jewish and Israeli attitudes towards Christianity. Continuing the tradition of the annual Hebrew conference, this year’s event, which will take place on June 22, 2023, will be dedicated to the thought of the recently deceased Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Since the latter was known for many years, prior to his papal election, as the main intellectual force of the Catholic Church, his thought, both in its initial, more liberal phase, and in its later, more conservative orientation, has had significant impact in the Catholic world, as well as in the interface between the Catholic Church and other religions—including Judaism—and in the relationship between the Catholic Church and other Churches, as well as the secular world. This conference will explore some facets of Benedict’s thought and its reception, and offer an introduction to these questions to the Israeli public.

The conference is co-organized by the CSC director, Dr. Yonatan Moss and his Department of Comparative Religion colleague,Dr. Karma Ben-Johanan.
